Putting the ‘Soul’ into South Wood Farm
Returning to South Wood Farm, a garden I openly call my favourite in the UK, I was almost nervous. Twelve months had passed since my last visit and I found myself wondering whether it would live up to my memory. Had I made it better in my mind? Would I be disappointed?
The moment I stepped beneath the woodland canopy and arrived at a babbling stream crossed by a rustic timber bridge, I breathed a sigh of relief.
This was going to be good - great even.
Why do gardens fall behind? - -the outdoor paradox
Over a lifetime, we spend tens of thousands updating our interiors because we understand something fundamental: homes evolve as we do. Careers shift. Children grow. Energy changes. Taste matures. So we repaint, remodel and rearrange without hesitation. We expect the inside of our homes to keep pace with who we are becoming.
Gardens rarely receive the same consideration.
This post explores why that happens, what belonging actually means in practical terms, and what changes when your outdoor space finally evolves with you rather than anchoring you to a past chapter.
